What is vinyl siding?Vinyl siding is exterior building clad that is made out of polyvinyl chloride,(better known as PVC). Unlike many other items composed of PVC, Vinyl siding is typically made of over 75% PVC resin. The remaining percentage is normally a manufacturer's secret. They are a mixture of elements that give vinyl siding its flexibility, impact resistance, color, resistance to fading, and more. Like many other plastic or PVC product, PVC is made in a process called extrusion. All of the ingredients are melted and pumped out of a mold in a continuous production line.
How much is vinyl siding going to cost?I think that when many people compare the costs of siding a home with vinyl siding vs. wood, they tend to look past some of the important details such as the channels you'll need for the interior and exterior corners and such. For example, 2 separate buildings with the same square footage can have significantly different costs associated with siding them because of factors such as number of windows, doors, and design features such as corners and edges. All of the specialized channels can add up over the course of a building project.
Is vinyl siding cheaper than wooden siding?Yes, vinyl siding is going to be cheaper in the long run and up front as compared to alternative siding products such as wood. The up front costs of using vinyl is normally half that of it's wood shingle counterpart. The vinyl lasts over twice as long as conventional vinyl siding as well with much less maintenance required during it's life. However, there are those whom state using vinyl on a home lessens the appraised value (as opposed to using wooden shingles). This value lowering phenomenon may have some credit, but should be taken in a case by case basis.
How much siding will I need?Just as with building things out of wood, you're not going to be able to use 100% of the raw product, in the finished product.
Just as with wood, the siding is going to need to be cut to fit specific sections of your home, with one piece being the waste. Even though your contractor can reuse some of the waste, the cost always goes up. Some contractors claim they can side most building with as little waste as 20%.
That pretty much means that you'll need to buy 25% more siding that the square footage of the exterior of your home.
